            MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS  
          
        Secretary of Defense 
        William J. Perry will leave Washington, D.C., Tuesday, Oct. 15 to visit 
        Moscow, Russia. 
         
        Perry will be accompanied on his trip by Sens. Sam Nunn (D- Ga.) and Richard 
        G. Lugar (R-Ind.), the sponsors of the original legislation that funded 
        the Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) program, and Sen. Joseph 
        Lieberman (D-Conn). Under this program, the U.S. provides assistance to 
        Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakstan to reduce nuclear and other weapons 
        of mass destruction and prevent proliferation of weapons and fissile material. 
        
         While in Moscow, 
          Perry will meet with senior government and military officials to discuss 
          bilateral military-to-military relations and regional security issues. 
          He will also deliver addresses to the State Duma and to the Military 
          Academy of the General Staff. 
          Additionally, the 
          Secretary and his traveling party will visit Severodvinsk, where CTR 
          equipment is being used to eliminate nuclear submarines under START 
          I. 
          Perry will return 
          to Washington on Friday, October 18.
